Describe three examples where you think these processes (ie, constructivism, accommodation, etc.) are taking place; OR draw three pictures that you think correspond to three of these terms.
Definitions
Assimilation: the cognitive process of fitting new information into existing cognitive schemas, perceptions, and understanding.
Accommodation: the revision modification of pre-existing concepts in terms of new information or experience. The text uses the example of a toddler first calling anything flying a bird. Eventually, the child will learn the characteristics of a bird, and distinguish between a bird, and say airplane.
Constructivism: A philosophy of learning founded on the premise that, by reflecting on our experiences, we construct our own understanding of the world we live in.
Discrimination: Discrimination is operant conditioning, the ability to distinguish between similar operant and the origin operant (when a student learns to make verbal comments only when the situation is favorable, or when the teacher is asking questions or leading discussion).
Equilibrium: The balance between the reliance of prior information and the openness to new information.
